Graphic designer Bára Ösp Kristgeirsdóttir is a 2013 graduate of the Iceland Academy of the Arts.

Her final project is a new image for the mountain and outdoors living center Volcano Huts in Þórsmörk, one of the most beautiful valleys in the highlands of Iceland.

Kristgeirsdottir started her research by asking people what they thought about Þórsmörk. “Stuck in a car in the Krossá-river”, “Eyjafjallajökull” and “a wet tent” were typical answers.

I concluded from the answers that Þórsmörk offered all kinds of experiences and those quite memorable.

For the logo, Kristgeirsdóttir concentrated on the three glaciers surrounding Þórsmörk and used stories and memories of the place. The company’s colours are blue and orange, where the blue is a reference to the rivers in the area and the orange refers to the old A-tents.

The Picnic Set is a convenience which should make day trips around Þórsmörk easier as well as introducing Volcano Huts as a service provider for travellers in the area.

It contains a lunchbox, a map showing the five main walking paths near the Volcano Huts, a postcard and a blanket which can be transformed into a bag containing the set. The orange material is the same material that was in the old A-tents. The colour is also a safety feature for hikers as it can be spotted from afar.

The project was exhibited at Reykjavik Art Museum in the LHÍ Final Exhibition 2013.
